A small API response change can break a client application. Review the contract against actual consumer scenarios before release. WRITE DOWN THE PROMISE For important operations, document method, address, parameters, required fields, types and possible errors. OpenAPI supplies a format for describing HTTP APIs, but a description file does not prove implementation conformance. Name an owner for the description and link it from the release procedure. REVIEW THE LESS OBVIOUS CHANGES Removing a field is easy to spot. Renaming it, turning a number into a string, adding an enum value or changing null behavior may become visible only in a consumer. Even a new optional field can upset a strict client parser. Separate clearly breaking changes from changes that require checking particular consumers rather than labelling everything additive as automatically safe. BUILD A SMALL FIXTURE SET Prepare harmless examples: a typical result, empty list, missing optional field, validation error and access-denied response. Add each supported currency or date representation if those are part of the interface. Run the fixtures through supported client versions, not only through the new server. Payment integrations should use the provider's test environment without an actual charge. PLAN THE CONSUMER TRANSITION For incompatible changes, agree a versioning approach and transition window. A date in an internal task is not notification to an API user. Record who was notified, where updated documentation lives and who monitors old requests. Microsoft's API design guidance treats versioning as part of supporting consumers; choose the actual scheme to fit the product. Give documentation and the API a stable address. A clear domain structure helps navigation but cannot replace a compatible contract. When shortlisting a domain for an API product, consider both the name and the maintenance process that will follow launch. Keep the fixture results with the release record so the next update starts from evidence, not memory.
